The 2026 MC Scow National Championship brought 96 boats to Crystal Lake Yacht Club for a fantastic week of racing. With a strong fleet, a beautiful venue, and competitive conditions, the championship was everything you hope to see at a national-level event.
Crystal Lake Yacht Club and the race committee put on an excellent event from start to finish. On the water, the use of mark-set boats and Vakaros helped keep racing efficient and fair throughout the championship.
Terhune's Takeaways from the Championship
After three days of racing, Allan Terhune Jr. came away as the 2026 MC Scow National Champion. He shared two areas that stood out as particularly important throughout the event: starting and sail setup.
“Starting was a big factor for me. Practicing the ‘launch,’ as I call it, to get off the line with speed using your Vakaros was key. I did many practice runs at the start to make sure it worked well.”
“The other was sail setup and making constant adjustments. Playing the vang and looking up the course at the breeze helped me know when I needed to power up or depower as conditions changed.”
With 96 boats on the starting line, small gains made a big difference.
