Close Competition Highlights Melges 19 Winter Series 3

The Melges 19 fleet returned to the Melges Watersports Center for Winter Series 3, marking the biggest event yet for the class and another standout weekend on the water.

The action began Friday with a clinic led by Melges Team Members Ted Keller and Allan Terhune, giving sailors valuable time to tune up ahead of racing. Teams focused on drills, boat handling, and preparation, setting the stage for a competitive weekend.

Saturday morning started with no wind and an AP ashore, but patience paid off as the breeze filled around noon. Sailors headed out and completed four races in building conditions, with tight racing across the fleet and frequent lead changes throughout the day. After racing, competitors gathered by the water for drinks, music, and a group debrief before heading out for dinner at a local spot in town — a perfect mix of competition and camaraderie.

Sunday delivered on the forecast, bringing puffy conditions early in the morning. Three races were completed in building breeze, with just two points separating the top three teams heading into the final race. In the end, Art Brereton, Will Huerth and Ripley Shelly, secured the overall win by just one point over Doug Wake, Todd Wake, and Ian Beckley after an intense final showdown.

With epic conditions both days and competition tighter than ever, Winter Series 3 showcased the momentum building within the Melges 19 class. The fleet continues to grow each regatta, and all eyes now turn toward the Midwinters in March.

The Melges 19 is quickly becoming the fleet to be — and this is just the beginning.  Future events are being posted and the Winter Series in 2026 - 2027 at the Melges Water Sports Center will feature the classes first National Championship.
