Melges 15 Fleet Battles Through Varied Conditions at Long Beach Race Week

The Melges 15 fleet returned to Long Beach Race Week with 17 boats on the starting line, completing seven races over three days in one of the strongest California State Championship Series events of the season.

Long Beach delivered a full range of conditions throughout the weekend, giving competitors a little bit of everything. The fleet saw lighter breeze, heavier breeze, steep chop, and constantly changing racecourse dynamics that rewarded consistency, quick decisions, and resilience across the three-day event.

After seven races, Allie Blecher and Katie Moran emerged victorious with an impressive display of consistency. Their scoreline never strayed far from the front of the fleet, allowing them to capture the overall win in a highly competitive 17-boat field where every point mattered.

Morgan and Emily Paxhia finished second overall after winning three races during the series, while Tim Zimmermann completed the podium in third with another strong performance in the growing West Coast fleet.

The depth of the Melges 15 fleet was evident throughout the regatta, with tight racing across the standings and multiple teams showing the speed to compete at the front. Long Beach once again proved to be a demanding venue, requiring teams to shift modes quickly as the breeze and sea state changed from race to race.

“An incredible weekend of racing at Long Beach Race Week,” said Allie Blecher, who sailed with Katie Moran. “Long Beach delivered a little bit of everything—light and heavy breeze, steep chop, and constantly changing conditions that made every race a mental and physical challenge. The racing was really tight in the Melges 15 fleet all weekend, and every point mattered. It’s a venue that demanded consistency, quick decisions, and resilience, which made coming away with the win that much more rewarding.

“Huge thanks to the race organizers, volunteers, competitors, and everyone who helped make the weekend possible. Looking forward to carrying this momentum into the next event!”

With Long Beach Race Week complete, the California State Championship Series is beginning to take shape. Four events into the season, Morgan Paxhia leads the overall standings with 42 points, followed by Tim Zimmermann with 33 points and Robbie King with 26 points. The close competition throughout the top ten reflects the depth of the growing West Coast fleet and sets up an exciting second half of the championship.

The season-long category battles are also adding another layer to the series. Allie Blecher currently leads the Female Skipper standings, Nick Kofski and Brad Thompson are tied atop the Masters division, Jay Gollison leads both the Grand Masters and Couples divisions, and Ian Sammis leads the Family division after sailing with his son Jax. These categories continue to highlight one of the strengths of the Melges 15 class: competitive one-design racing that welcomes a wide range of sailors, teams, families, and generations.

The next stop on the California State Championship Series is the High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake, July 18–19, where the fleet will trade ocean breeze and chop for one of California’s most unique and scenic mountain sailing venues.
