The final stop of the first-ever Melges 19 Winter Series delivered exactly what you’d hope for in a championship event—tight racing, a full range of conditions, and a fleet that continues to build both in numbers and camaraderie.
Over three days, Midwinters tested the fleet in just about everything. Friday brought lighter, building conditions that demanded patience and precision. By Saturday, the breeze filled in, delivering classic champagne conditions and plenty of opportunities to make gains. Sunday brought too much breeze, ultimately forcing an early end to the event.

Across all conditions, one thing remained constant: incredibly close racing. With 11 boats on the line, mark roundings regularly saw the majority of the fleet overlapped and within striking distance. No lead felt safe, and every shift or tactical decision had the potential to reshuffle the standings. It’s a testament to both the competitiveness of the fleet and how quickly teams are getting up to speed in the Melges 19.
One of the most exciting elements of this event—and the Winter Series as a whole—has been the mix of sailors finding their way into the class. New faces jumped into the fleet at Midwinters and immediately made their presence known, adding even more depth to an already competitive group.
What makes the Melges 19 fleet especially unique is where everyone comes from. There’s a real depth of talent, with sailors crossing over from E Scow, J/70, VX One, Melges 24, and Melges 15 fleets. That diversity of experience is elevating the level of racing across the board.

But beyond the results and the competition, what truly defined Midwinters—and the entire Winter Series—was the atmosphere. The camaraderie on and off the water continues to stand out. Whether it’s post-race debriefs, dockside conversations, or simply sharing the experience of a new and growing class, the Melges 19 fleet is quickly becoming known not just for great racing, but for great people.
